I still see at as Boringstoke. I mean, there may be dirty boozers and what have you, but that's not the same thing as having a 'nightlife'. I am about to move away from Southampton (to Brighton) as I thought that it was boring, but at least it had more than the 2 or 3 or so 'clubs' that Bjoke has. I admit that the leisure area (i.e. chain restaurants and cinema) gives you something to do if you are unlucky enough to get dragged to Bjoke for some family thing, but it is a bit small time anyway. It always struck me as soulless, the only thing there are shops and shoppers - nothing else. Pleasantville without the nice people and the black and white.
PS: it would be a nicer place if most of the inhabitants would stop pretending that they are Londoners, i.e. the little chavs pretending they are a New Cross street gang or the geezer types who you can't fail to bump into.

Possibly gonna be taking a job in Bashingstoke in the new year so I thought I'd do a little bit of investigating on the web to see what I could find out about the place. This site seems to be pretty positive. I'm wondering if people are friendly as I won't know anyone within a 2 hour drive.

I moved back to UK a year ago after a long period spent living in Australia & settled in Basingstoke - not regreted it at all. Basingstoke people are really friendly and the facilities are good...you don't know how lucky you are with facilities such as gym, cinema, live theatres etc all within the town centre. The website is great and good to see something positive written about the area.

Soon moving to Basingstoke to work at the local hospital.
Any previous outsiders who had moved to Basingstoke and would care to share some advise of house purchase such as the area and past experience is welcome.
Also comments from the locals are appreciated.
I was there last weekend and found the few local people were rather helpful with my enquiry.
Thanks

Basingstoke - so interesting that there has been nothing to add since 1 January - and now it's 16 August!! Site does look quite good, however.
Some interesting items - but surely banknotes are not printed in Basingstoke but in a nearby village. I get really annoyed when attempts are made to 'highjack' places that are NOT Basingstoke just because they happen to fall within the Basingstoke and Deane Council's area of responsibility. It is most certainly not the same thing.
Couldn't find a link to make an entry in the guestbook anywhere on the web page - eventually linked from your very first entry in the book itself where you bemoan the lack of entries.!
[if you click at the top of the page where it says "Sign the Guestbook" it'll take you to the page - Ed.]

I think Basingstoke is a rather nice place to live and disagree with the comment that the council is somewhat racist. There are very few areas of social housing left in Basingstoke and each area, be it Popley or South Ham etc have a very diverse mix of people on them.
It's easy to dismiss Basingstoke if you don't live here, but most of the local schools are good, it has new shops which are better than ever before and a sense of community you rarely find in London. Don't knock what you know nothing about!

I also always use the cinema its easy to get to, and as Newbury still hasn't got one :( I do not think Basingstoke is Boring, however I can understand people that live there may think so, Don't we all think the town we live in is boring.

I think Basingstoke is a great place to live. We left there 8 years ago and moved to Derby. Can't wait to come back now. I want see all those lovely friendly people again and enjoy that good clean air. Although up here it's called down in the 'smoke'I can't think why. Someone once said only boring people get bored. Basingstoke was never boring when we lived there.

Would Rather be in London.
Think this place is some what racist, Council tends to put black people in one area YAP "popley" 1,2,3 and 4.
And yes it is BORINGSTOKE and deffo BASINGJOKE.
Well it makes sense.
Nothing goes on here for the youngsters and all they do is complain about them hanging out at the local shops etc....
All the under privalliged are bundled together by the local council, (why do you think you gotta fill out a form when applying for accomadation with the council...ETHNIC...EMPLOYMENT STATUS ETC)HA HA thought it didnt matter??

I have lived in Basingstoke and have seen it change loads. I can say Basingstoke isn't boring and there are many things for people to do and for all ages. There are things wrong with Basingstoke but everywhere has a place or places where things are wrong, but Basingstoke is a nice place. Now the town centre and the surrounding areas are nearly complete of all the building work its looking nice again. Never judge a book by its cover - remember that.

Dear Sir,
I came across your website. I have to say I was most impressed! Congratulations to you!! I have visited Basingstoke on numerous occasions, and have too found it to be a pleasant enough place. Although when I went I couldn't see any Greggs'; has this problem been rectified since??
Looking at your list of famous Basingstokians, I noticed I wasn't on the list! While I wasn't born there, or have ever lived there, I am a massive fan, AND am a DJ at a student radio station. WOW!! Can I join the club?
I can't believe people called it Boringstoke. HOW RUDE!! There are many worse places, for example Croydon. Can't think of anymore though. Maybe I can come up with a song, with a chant line "Basingstoke not Boringstoke" using Mott the Hoople's 'All The Young Dudes'?
Anyway I look forward to hearing from you soon
Basingstoke, not Boringstoke etc.!
[should you visit again I think you'll be pleasantly surprised, as there are now TWO Greggs in the town  - Ed.]

Blimey, there's so much going on/been going on in Basingstoke I realise I am wasting my life here in Wapping and am going to sell up and move to Basingstoke, bringing my fancy London ways with me. Seriously, this is a fantastic site to be admired and emulated. I then thought of doing something similar for a certain east London borough, but it has nothing, nothing going for it by comparison. I think we once by-passed Basingstoke on the way to Dorset, or somewhere. Clearly a mistake.
Cheers, Helen.
